A box and its lid

Finger joints in 3mm acacia ply. The box is easy; the lid that fits is not.

This week is boxes. A small lidded box out of 3mm acacia ply, finger joints all round, cut in one sheet and folded together like paper.

The joints themselves went together on the second try once the kerf was measured instead of guessed — the beam eats about a tenth of a millimetre a side, and a tenth is the difference between a press fit and a rattle.

The lid is the open problem. Too tight and it squeaks, too loose and it slides off in a bag. The current pass has a friction lip that works until the humidity changes, which in Manila means until the afternoon. Next pass tries a deeper lip and a fingernail notch.
